Done.

My last official day of classes was Thursday, April 10th and even though it feels great to be done it’s still really sad that I won’t see all my friends every day anymore. But we’re all going into the industry so I’m sure it won’t be too much of a hardship.

We have our industry night on April 30th so that will be cool - if you’d like to come or know more check out the website HERE.

So the job hunt is officially ON. There are a few places I’m really hoping for, for at least the opportunity of an interview, if nothing else - one being Raincity Studios… but let’s not get our hopes up shall we? Until I get a job in the industry though I’ll be working full time at McDonald’s and doing some freelance work on the side. So if anyone has any web work they need done feel free to fill out my Request for Services form.

Everybody cross your fingers for me on that permanent job in the industry - would be awesome to move on from McDonald’s and follow my dreams sooner rather than later. Thanks guys!

Peace. Peace Out

Wordpress 2.5 Released

The latest Wordpress upgrade was released last weekend -all the waiting… and it’s here. From what I’ve seen so far it’s pretty slick. The new design is nice and everything still seems to work great, and Wordpress has also redesigned their entire website to mirror the new back-end of the 2.5 upgrade. There are only a couple problems I’ve encountered so far - 24hrs into my upgrade.

I have a plug-in I’m using for my forms called cforms and everything seems to still be working fine except the button to insert your forms into pages is no longer in the editor. This is not a 2.5 problem more likely an upgrade problem for cforms - but a problem still nonetheless.

The second problem I’ve encountered is that of adding images to posts and pages. When adding media it gives you an option to either type in the url or browse your computer and add it to your uploads. Whenever I try uploading this way it says there is an error and although it says there is one image in my gallery, only the error shows up - no images. However if you upload the image through your ftp client into your uploads folder and give the url it works fine that way. I’ve also found with the images that I cannot go to Manage Uploads and ‘manage’ anything because I cannot view any images and I get another error.

I think the error I’ve been getting is slightly different than others I have found people talking about in the Wordpress forums however if you are having a similar problem I suggest checking out Lisa Sabin-Wilson’s blog as she seems to have found a solution to the problem she was having with the media uploader.

On a side note tomorrow I’ll be attending the Massive Technology Show in Vancouver for a few hours. It should be interesting and an excellent opportunity to meet some new people. I’ll be posting about it later in the week. Stay tuned.

Peace. Peace Out

Vancouver Facebook Developer Garage - Part II

So on Monday night(the 27th) I attended the 2nd Vancouver Facebook Developer Garage and I was actually very impressed. Nobody presented any lame apps like the Zombies or What Color Are You? that are completely useless. All of the 11 applications presented had some sort of useful purpose to them and were developed very well. The presentations given were as follows:

  • Eat-A-Rama by ActiveState (Plus Mini-Lightning Talk)
  • Mixx Maker (V2.0) by Project Opus / Donat Group
  • (The World’s Biggest) Hockey Pool + Friend of the Month by Ben Nevile (Mainsocial)
  • The Snow Report by Jeremy Holland and Dean Halford (MOK Agency)
  • These Are My Kids by Kinzin / Uniserve
  • 10 Friends Notes by Colin Kierans
  • My Food Fix by Matthew Chiu
  • I’m Reading by Garth Shoemaker
  • Vibrator by Chris Richardson (EQO)
  • $uper Rewards by Jason Bailey (Plus Mini-Lightning Talk)
  • Mini-Lightning Talk on Hosting Options and Tips and Tricks on Handling Millions of Facebookers by Mark Mayo (Joyent).
  • My favourite presentation was that of “These Are My Kids”. It seemed as though it was very well developed and that they had put a lot of thought into the entire idea. I suggest you check it out and if you’re a parent, add it once it’s released, because it looks to be very useful. As for an application I would add myself I’d probably choose the”Mixx Maker”, which is an application which allows you to make your own mixes or playlists and allows your friends to add to them as well. I’d also probably use “I’m Reading” and “Eat-A-Rama” just because they’re cool and I definitely probably use them on a regular basis. All in all it was a great night. Lot’s of good developing going on and all for a good cause - we’d like to think anyway. If I remember more that I’d like to bring up later then I’ll blog about it again. But that’s all for now. Have a sweet day/evening. Drive safe in all that snow here in the lower mainland!

    Rebekah Out.

    Vancouver Facebook Developer Garage

So it seems Facebook is the way of the future. Anyone who wants to try and be their competition (if they weren’t to begin with - like MySpace) then I commend them for their bravery. But alas, I hope the competition is prepared to be shot down. I myself have not created a facebook application yet. Note that word yet. Although I’m not a big fan of facebook applications as they clutter up the profile and such I do think that it is a great learning experience and an awesome thing to include in a portfolio. I mean come on, think about it… you go to apply for some sort of web job and you say “yeah I also created a couple facebook applications” that makes you instantly cool and jump starts your interviewers interest in you - because it is so popular and so “in” right now. Although my facebook application development is still in the “yet” stage I plan on attending the Vancouver Facebook Garage to expand my knowledge about the back-end part of this uber-popular social networking extravaganza. And best of all it’s FREE. Do I have your attention yet? I said… FREE!!! So get outta the house and learn something new - attend the Vancouver Facebook Garage. I’ll blog about it after I attend of course. But still, experience it first hand! For more information you can go to their Wiki or check out the Facebook event page. And yes, in case you were wondering, I DO have a facebook profile - and it’s very cluttered with applications right now, that would make sense hm? Hope to see a great turnout for this event! It should be tons of fun and lots of good learnin’!
