Week Three Wit

I signed up to do the Wit portion of the meeting this week. I hadn’t planned on how I would start so I ended up stumbling over my words and saying a bunch of ‘ums’ trying to remember a certain word (ARG). However after I got started, I was fine.

Unfortunately due to the fact that all prepared speech spots are filled for the next 2.5 months I had to sign up for my Ice Breaker (the first speech) a lot sooner than I wanted to. A lot sooner. So, as fate would have it, I have my first prepared speech a week from today.

The first speech you do at Toastmasters (aka the Ice Breaker) is about yourself – I guess because its the easiest subject. I’ve got about 3 minutes so far of the 4-6 minutes needed and it sounds way too cheezy for my liking. I’m my own worst critic, I know. I’ve also discovered I need to speak slower in general cause I talk too fast. We’ll see how it goes. We’ll also see if my colleagues decide to randomly show up, I don’t think I’d mind if they did actually… maybe because I’m still so new to it that I can use the very excuse that I’m new to it, haha.

Until next week, later!

Day 2 – Silence

Toastmasters tonight was really good. I had planned on signing up to do the Wit or the Invocation for the evening but the spot was taken before I had a chance to find anything I could speak about. Hopefully next week! I had an odd bout of slience tonight though. Usually I’m not so quiet but tonight I was so mellow… barely any chatting. Hopefully it means I learned something because I was more observant! Any suggestions for a powerful invocation or a funny story for me to share next week are welcome!

Toastmasters

So today I joined Toastmasters! Now if you don’t know what Toastmasters is, it’s a class on the art of making toast. Okay, kidding. Although, that could be cool – at least there would be food in class.

Okay, seriously? Toastmasters is a public speaking group. I keep thinking that I could SO do this and that I have more confidence in front of other people than I actually do and then when I finally have to speak I’ll wonder what the hell I was thinking.

Anyway I’ll see how it goes. I could use a little more confidence in myself and it will be good for meeting new people as well as speaking in meetings or on the phone with clients for work. I’m hoping it will improve my listening skills too – my mind tends to wander a little too much in some meetings. In any case, I shall keep updating on my experiences at Toastmasters – I think it will be awesome!

No turning back, full speed ahead! *quiet humming* (I have confidence in sunshine, I have confidence in rain, I have confidence that spring will come again, but most of all you see, I have confidence in ME!)

Sounds About Right.

This looks about right. Although I think a section of this pie should include something along the lines of “testing mother-f*#$%@ code in this piece of s*#! browser”.

Redesign Suggestions

I mentioned I was going to redesign this website last November. Well, 4 months have gone by and many versions have come and gone in my mind and I feel like I’m still at square one.

When I prompted for advice or tips, a friend of mine asked me “what do you want it to do?”. So thinking of it from a functionality point of view, and then once that is decided, moving onto how it should look.

When I was in school, our portfolio class instructors told us our site should express our personalities, who we are, and what our strengths are. Thinking of it from this point of view I’m unsure of what I could design that would have “Rebekah” written all over it, short of the literal interpretation of that phrase.

So putting these two pieces of advice together I’m still working on it, and still at square one. My impatience with design doesn’t help me either. If anyone has any suggestions what-so-ever, PLEASE let me know! I’ll take any advice and tips I can get!
